Sveta Gora Hill, Hill with Veliko Turnovo University and the Monument to Patriarch Euthymius Turnovgrad capital) rises south of Tsarevets.
It is so called in anology with Sveta Gora (Mount Athos).
Numerous churches and monasteries, had been built in that busy spiritual and cultural centre ot the Bulgarian state, where vigorous literary activities went on.
In the largest of the monasteries, of the Holy Virgin Hodegetria, the activities of Turnovo Art School and Turnovo Literary School flourished, directly connected with Patriarch Euthymius of Turnovo, the outstanding man of letters and clergyman.
The monastery was razed to the ground after the fall of Bulgaria under Turkish rule.
Now rising on Sveta Gora Hill, a liter- ary and culture hub, is St St Cyril and Methodius University of Veliko Turnovo.
A walk taken round Veliko Turnovo is source of surprising meetings and a feeling, characteristic of this town alone, of the simultaneous existence of history and space.
The town’s cultural and historical monuments are numerous and impressive.
